Work is already well underway at Skelligs Retreat and now we’re delighted to have received detailed planning consent to continue our exciting vision for this corner of County Kerry.
After granting initial planning consent in May 2022, Kerry County Council have now approved our detailed plans, including alterations to the existing farm buildings, change of use to a wellness retreat, a series of extensions to the site and associated works such as waste water treatment plant and a new car park.
Setting out our vision
We can now confirm that the retreat will consist of two main areas – The Old House and The Cowsheds.
The Old House will be extended to include a reception area, kitchen, lounge, library, spa facilities and three luxury suites. The Cow Sheds will be repurposed, incorporating two more luxury suites, a lounge, guest bar and a multi-use studio for yoga, meditation and other wellbeing practices. This space can also be used for business activities such as team building events or private functions.
As with everything at Skelligs Retreat, each structure has been designed sensitively to ensure the use of sustainable materials where possible, retaining and reusing the original materials and features that were so integral to the site when the farm buildings were built by our ancestors.
Our plan is to create a largely self-sustaining site, where guests can contribute to a circular economy and support ancient farming methods.
Those who visit Skelligs Retreat will be able to choose from a hand-picked list of wellness activities and outdoor pursuits, including local crafts and traditions. They can eat vegetables grown on the land and fresh fish caught from the sea. All whilst enjoying the clean air, peace and tranquillity that makes this site so unique, with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Skellig Michael, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What are the next steps?
Next, we’ll continue making progress on site with restoration and preparatory works as we move towards the construction stage in spring 2024.
Behind the scenes, we’re working hard to bring our existing plans to reality, from detailed layouts of internal spaces, right down to the interior designs. We’re working with local partners and suppliers to compile a definitive list of all the experiences we will offer on-site and in the surrounding local area. We are also working on an updated website to tell people more about what they can expect from Skelligs Retreat. Expect more news in the new year.
Skelligs Retreat will open in June 2025 and we’re excited to be able to offer a completely unique experience to guests from all over the world.
We’d love your feedback and input as we continue to evolve our plans for Skelligs Retreat. If you have any ideas, or if you’re a local business who would like to get involved, please email us on interest@skelligsretreat.ie.
