Skelligs Retreat sits at Allagheemore, in the Gaeltacht of South Kerry, surrounded by mountains, farmland and the Atlantic Ocean.
It feels remote because it is.
Skellig Michael lies out in front of us. Canuig rises behind. Around us are nearly 200 acres of working organic farmland, abundant nature and Atlantic coastline.

The Skelligs

Eight miles out in the Atlantic Ocean, Skellig Michael and Little Skellig rise almost impossibly from the water. Skellig Michael is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where early Christian monks built a monastery and made their lives more than a thousand years ago. From the retreat, they're part of the view. Some days they're so clear they seem considerably closer. Other days, Kerry's weather hides them altogether.

Something runs through this place

Skellig Michael is also associated with the Saint Michael spirit line, a tradition connecting sacred sites dedicated to Saint Michael across Europe and onwards towards the Middle East. History, pilgrimage, spirituality, mythology and folklore have gathered around this landscape for generations. Together, they have left their mark on this place.

Where Kerry takes you

Ballinskelligs, Portmagee, Valentia Island, Waterville and Cahersiveen are all within reach, with Killarney further on. But don't be in too much of a hurry. The journey here - mountains, coast, villages, narrowing roads and changing views - is part of arriving.
Concentrate on getting there, not when.

The weather

You'll notice we talk about the weather quite a bit. There's a reason. We're on the Atlantic, beneath the mountains, with the Gulf Stream influencing the climate. Weather moves through here rather than politely following an app. Mist can hide the mountains. Rain changes the land. Wind brings the Atlantic Ocean to life. Then the clouds part and everything looks different again. Don't wait for perfect conditions.
The weather isn't getting in the way of being here. It's part of being here.
